Of course my hard earned FIRST dragonboat medal from the 5-crew race last weekend! For the past 1 year or so, it has always been plates from Minor Finals, and finally last Sunday the hard work has paid off.

It was such a humbling experience for me, given the chance to row with a bunch of "old guards" who had rowed for NUS and Kiyah Splashh during their glory days. Even though we had to row 2 additional repercharges on the first day before reaching the semi, it gave us the chance to fine tune our techniques and seating arrangements. We reach the Men's Open final after a tight race, beating 2nd placed PLK Paddlers by a mere 0.12 seconds. The Inter Business/Clubs semi was just as competitive, and we lost to another Kiyah team by 0.22 seconds. Nevertheless, we gave it all out in the Men's Open final and redeemed ourselves with a respectable 2nd place win.

Of course another (not-so) sweet occasion that weekend was Eliza's grand 24th celebration. It was held at the same place as last year's Xmas at Bt Batok chalet, but this time it was the rugged type, with no furnitures. Not so suitable for an overnight stay, unless you don't mind roughing it out on the floor. After the 2 sets of heats and 2 sets of repercharges, I still had to do up the place with Jenn. We were done decorating the place even before Lynn could lend her hands. (Hint: She was not early as usual. . .)

The atmosphere felt like a mini Xmas celebration, competing in must-have Taboo and also crowning the best Eliza-dressed of the night. With Jenn Gaga presence, what more can you ask for your big day. . .!

My Good, Good Night. . .

Who cares whether Brawn managed to clinch the constructor championship or Hamilton won the race at Singapore F1 race. The highlight was the F1 concert at Fort Canning Park on 26th September. The night where my all time favourite girl performed in front of 9,000 screaming fans. It was a long wait but it was certainly worth it. I started queuing with Jon from 2pm onwards to grab the best spot in front of the stage. And we managed to! Right in front at the barricades.

Beyonce appeared only at midnight, but we were treated to good music by DJ Havana Brown. She was so hot. . . and the music she spinned was even hotter - hot club R&B music which got the crowds pumped up. They ended with their no. 1 reigning hit on the Hot 100 Billboard for 13 weeks - I Gotta Feeling, which was so grand with confetti showering the whole park. DJ Seb Fontaine then spinned electronic pop songs til midnight.

When the clock struck midnight, everyone was chanting for Beyonce to come on stage. Although she was nursing a sore throat, she gave it her all with a perfect voice and routine. A true classy performer indeed. Her Halo finale tribute to the King of Pop was so haunting and I'm sure some of fans were left in tears. I was left with a hoarse voice by 2am after all that screaming and shouting. . . I guess it was my sign of love for her, together in health and sickness. . .having sore throats together. . .

Idol not-so Fever

Its here again. . . After a 3 year hiatus, the Singapore version of the most popular singing reality TV show is back. Claimed by the media as the most "talented" season ever, I almost fell off the chair. The local version pales in comparison to the American counterparts, in terms of EVERYTHING, from talent to production wise.

Huge notable difference is having the results show on the same day as the piano show. And there were only 2 piano show, where 6 contestants from each show will make up the Top 12. Its an obvious move to cut cost by compacting everything, truly Singapore "chop chop" style.

There's a significant presence of exotic Eurasians for this season. My fave will be Frances - a big girl with a big voice. Its a waste that she was voted off. Farhan Shah is on his way to become the next Taufik, but not the voice though. The males contestants so far are adopting the Kris Allen style, belting out acoustic songs. But Syltra shamed the guys totally. She did a KT Tunstall number, strumming the guitar so well with her rendition of "Black Horse & Cherry Trees." However the best performance of the night was not by any of the Idols, it was Michael Learns to Rock. I'm definitely rooting for a female idol winner this year. Its a tall order, given the votes are always for the pretty boys. All 3 voted in by viewers are, no surprise, male contestants and the other 3 females had to depend on the Judges' votes.

Anyway I am not really expecting much out of the show, just watching it to clock my TV hours. I guess everyone should know by now that the winner won't EVER make it in the English music industry. It's well proven by our previous 2 Idols, who went on to make records in their native language and make a name for themselves, not even locally but overseas. In short, the winner will make it big in Malaysia, Indonesia or Taiwan. . . but not Singapore. Sad but true. . .

Running Frenzy. .

The running spirit is still burning strong within me. F1 Rocks will run for 3 days from 24th Sep to 26 Sep, with different artists gracing the event. But of course 26th is the main highlight for me, and it cost $180 which is $30 more compared to the the other 2 days. But who cares. . .its B and Peas for goodness sake!

I would have not been aware of it if it wasn't for Jon and Ama, who sms-ed me early in the morning, and were as excited as me. My precious ticket is now under key and lock for safekeeping. But when it comes to splashing your money on clothes, shoes and bags it will never ever suffice.

There were lots of highs and lows about this trip: Before, During & After! Supposedly to be 6 of us embarking on this trip but HL, Jef and Stel had to drop out due to work commitments. Jenn also almost didn't make it for this trip after cancelling it twice cos of SPF's travel restriction for staff in view of the H1N1 pandemic. Fortunately the restriction were lifted just days before 24th of July. Coincidentally Eliza and Lays booked on the same period as us on different flights.

All hell broke loose when you have 4 women coming together to wipe out the mall as much as possible. On average we spent around 6 hours per day, combing Platinum and Chatuchak. Our shopping mission was interrupted for a moment on the 3rd day in Platinum when Lays became an unfortunate pickpocket victim. Her shopping bag were cut at both sides unknowingly resulting in the loss of her wallet and handphone. It was kinda freaky cos it happened along a very short distance from the last time Lays still had her valuables with her. The thugs would have to get very close to her to make the cutting on her bag. My heart really goes out to her. . . I know how it felt like to lose your valuables. . . The unlucky incident didn't manage to dampen our spirit though. The ladies went on to add a few more shoes and dresses to their wardrobe.

We parted with Lays and Eliza at Khao San after our foot massage on the last night, and hoping to see them back in Singapore soon. But little did we know that our return flights were delayed the next day upon reaching the airport. Flights departure were pushed to 2 hrs later, so we convened again at Starbucks while waiting for departure. Weary and broke. . . I still had to drag myself to work the next morning and suffered the most severe post-holiday blues. . .

Counting down . . .

Have already cruised through my 2nd IPPT and have yet to be called up for ICT, shrugs. . . Just like last year, I took the IPPT so as to receive the monetary incentive in time for the upcoming Bangkok spree. Thanks to Huiliang's pace, we clinched the Gold again though he had to be contented with the same 24pts result as last year.

I watched "Obsessed" with Jenn and Lynn after that. With Beyonce starring in it, I wouldn't miss it for the world. I am not being biased, but the movie is really good. The nail biting scenes were so heart thumping and nerve wrecking that I felt as if it was a horror movie. Ali Larter was so convincing in her role as a slut that will surely have viewers flooding her inbox with hate mails after the show.

It was supposed to be a WRTS outing for a 1 year commemoration cum disbanding session. But since we couldn't have a full attendance, we shall just let it diminish into obscurity. We shall continue as a trio through the Bangkok trip (4 more days girls!!) til maybe Jenn get leashed around the "Collar." Back to MP3 days soon. . .

Going Bananas!

I really lived up to the "Banana Man" title around the office. Was so surprised at the overwhelming celebrations by my colleagues. At 0830, while I was still half awake at my desk and touching up my hair, my dearest colleagues from Inflight, Jasmine & Azura suddenly burst open the door, sang a birthday song at the top of their lungs and quickly ran back to their office. It sure woke me up, and some others who were around.

After lunch, they bought me this frozen banana coated with chocolate and nuts from Swensen's. I never knew such snack existed. Along with that, they burst through the door again, this time with the crowd from Inflight with a Swensen's ice cream and another song. Soon after trying to get back to work, Ground Services came in with another cake. . . chocolate banana from Secret Recipe, and another song. Today's quota have way exceeded with the second slice that I had to finish.

Just before knocking off, 3 of my fellow Social Committee members came through the door again with something on their hand. I would have either fainted or hide under the table if it was another cake. Phew, they gave me this cute T shirt from Nike with a banana slogan on it.

I am quite moved by all the sweet gestures, not only from my colleagues, also from my friends and team mates. In all, I had 4 Birthdays cakes over the past few days. With all that binging, I was worried that my IPPT Gold would be jeorpadised this Sat so I went for a 2.4km trial after work. Fortunately I am still on track for the $400. . .

Is it 10th, 12th or 14th?

It was my turn for the remnants of 3B13 to celebrate the yearly birthday celebrations. As I grow older, I do not really have much enthusiasm to commemorate the day I was born 24 years ago. However for the sake of formality and with some 'catching up' to do, we will usually have dinner together.

Since the actual day falls on a Tuesday, the dinner was brought forward 4 days earlier. My sincere thanks to them for bothering to make some time to attend the dinner. Also, for the lovely Adidas bag and watch gifts, though I had to wait for Lingzi who was late for the occasion to personally hand the gifts to me.

I had the honour of receiving early birthday wishes from 2 over-eagerly friends who thought that my Birthday was over, and wished me belated greetings. Fangs send me an SMS on the 11th, apologising for totally forgotten about it but claiming confidently that she knew it was my Birthday on the 10th. I didn't know how to react to that and just replied thanks with a hint of hesitation. The other one was Eliza, who asked if she was too late in wishing me this morning. Anyway, I appreciate their gesture, for (almost) remembering that I'm gonna be 24.

The honours doesn't stop there. Yesterday, Kiyah Splashhies celebrated my birthday together with 2 other July babies, Guolong & Edward, during the BBQ session at Pasir Ris Park. It was not the best time to have a BBQ as it was pouring heavily. The rain came and went 3 times throughout the night. The weather didn't dampen the mood though as all of us just stood by the pit sheltering the food with umbrellas. We stick through the rain and braved the cold weather together. Kept going back to Gramophone Parkway Parade after my gym sessions only to find out that the Deluxe Edition was sold out.

To date, The E.N.D has produced two No. 1's Billboard singles, with "Boom Boom Pow" topping the chart for 12 weeks and succeeded by the current reigning No. 1, "I Gotta Feeling". The album itself debuts at No. 1 on its release. That already speaks a lot about the album. BEP is well known for churning out hot party songs, frequently being spinned at clubs. With catchy hooks and beats, their tunes are favourites among partygoers.

Just like its previous 2 albums since the inclusion of Fergie in its lineup, The E.N.D has the same formula used. Majority of the tracks are fast tracks with catchy beats. Besides "Boom Boom Pow", others include "Imma Be", "Showdown" and "Electric City". Every BEP albums will have at least a socially-conscious track talking about politics and discrimination. For this album the track is called "One Tribe". However this track doesn't seem to have the impact like its previous Elephunk's "Where Is The Love" had. A Fergie solo "Out Of My Head" and the usual Apl De Ap's tribute song to his Filipino Roots "Mare" is also worth listening to.

The Deluxe edition comes a with second disc with tracks from BEP's previous album reinvented and remixed. The title also has been given a fresh name. The familiar tunes includes "Lets Get Re-Started", "Shut The Phunk Up" and "Pump It Harder". Rumours has it that there were tension among BEP members, especially between Fergie and Will.i.am. It seems that Fergie wants things to be done her way. With her successful solo effort a few years ago, fame has apparently got the better of The Dutchess. No doubt that Fergie is the reason BEP became commercially successful since her recruitment for Elephunk. The album title itself has a double meaning. Will we see the E.N.D of BEP? Time will only tell whether the quartet will keep the energy going on. .

Zzzzzz.. .

For the whole of this week I will be away from my desk that has been piling with endless work, for a course at SIA Training Centre. Calls for a celebration! A short one nevertheless as I will have to face the mountain of work again next week. . . However, I had a very hard time keeping my eyes open during the class for the past 2 days. My eyelids were so heavy, and I kept doing a couple of headbanging moves. Maybe I am just so used to slogging back at the office rather than just keep still and sit through the lectures.

Last weekend was a memorable day for myself as well as Kiyah. We clinched a Silver plate in the Minor Final after a long drought of accolades from SDBF. Definitely the best showing from Kiyah in a long time, with 3 teams advancing to the semi and 2 teams to the Plate & Minor Final. Our 20men could have done better though.

Though I paddled 5 sets of 800m over the period of 2 days, I resumed my gym session on Monday, bearing Coach's inspiring advice to continue our training almost immediately. And to my surprise, adhoc rowing session will resume this Sunday til commencement of the next season! It will do me good anyway, in preparation for the upcoming IPPT, need that $400, hopefully, for my BKK shopping spree. It will be my second test and I have yet to be called up for ICT. Shrugs~

The most anticipated trip of the year to Bangkok is just less than a month away, and Jenn just dropped the bombshell that she may NOT be able to make it. Given the current stupid swine outbreak, she would have to take a 7 days A/L for self imposed home quarantine. Saying its not worth it to sacrifice her leave, Jenn may not join for this trip. Anyway BKK2010 has already been booked (yes yes. . it was Dejavu all over again. . randomly booked tix for 2010 as it was dirt cheap), so she has that to look forward to, provided the swine will no longer be a threat.

8, 9, 10 and . . . easy. . .

2 weekends of adrenaline rush! First it was my second marathon for the Sundown two Saturdays ago. Although I completed the run, wasn't quite satisfied with my timing. I only manage to shave 4 minutes off my previous marathon. It's not a huge difference for me, though in the words of Madonna, I will be able to use that 4 minutes to save the world.

Then it was a rowing weekend at Putrajaya last week . It was Kiyah's first ever overseas stint and it was really a eye opener for all of us. The organiser have done a marvellous job of organising its first ever International Dragon Boat Festival. Our local races pales in comparison to them. In terms of the water quality, launching point, viewing gallery. . . it was all good. Every team, both local and foreign, were given a tentage each. Back here. . . teams will have to spend a bomb if they want a tent of their own, and for penniless teams like us, we will have to make do with a little corner spot under a tree.

The race site itself was like a carnival, with rows of stalls selling various merchandise. There were even "Meals on Wheels", from KFC to Kebabs. Back in Bedok Reservoir, we will have to make do with an auntie selling curry puffs and pre-packed typical fried noodles.

Although we couldn't go beyond the Heats, we were just glad to be there. We could have gone further, if we were not being grouped with powerhouse teams. In fact our time was better than those 2nd placed teams in other heats. Oh well. guess we were just not lucky enough, or perhaps didn't row hard enough? Most of us were panting mad after 2.20 min, at the end of the 500m course.

The experience is invaluable, and I had no regrets using up my 3 days of leave and roughing the 5 hours journey (or rather sleeping) in Tick Hong's Legacy.

Running Fest!

Its a back to back running event for these 2 weekends. Last Sunday I completed 15km in the Passion Run at East Coast Park. It was a good run for me, was cruising all the way and crossed the finishing line at 1 hr 16 min. This coming weekend I will be attempting my second full marathon at Sundown. The goal is to complete the run before sunrise and to better last year's timing. Impossible is nothing!

Without realising it, June is looming and half a year has already zoomed past. My June weekends are already packed even before it arrives. I will be off to Putrajaya for the inaugural Dragon Boat Festival with Kiyah Splashh - our first ever overseas race. Not expecting much, just there for the experience and exposure. But it wouldn't hurt for us to try and win back something. More training follow suit to prep us for SDBF on last week of June.

My mind is in disturbia right now. . . Trying very hard to pull off my company's first Social event for this year. There are bound to be unavoidable hiccups and glitches while ensuring the event runs smoothly. Also entertaining disgruntled fellow colleagues is inevitable. Give us a break. . we are trying our best. . .

A Day Out With Sugar Mummy!

It was a whole day 'affair' with Lynn, my 'sugar mummy.' Oh well, she 'paid' for my NUM purchases (thanks to the wallet saga a few days earlier, I am still waiting for my card). We were playing badminton earlier in the morning in Clementi. Was supposed to meet up at 1130 but somehow or rather my alarm didn't ring and I woke up at 1100. I can't possibly cancel the session else she will kill me so I rushed down by cab.

NUM was having its Tuky giveaway as well as 20% off for flops. I bought a pair, which was long overdue since mine was stolen in the gym by this retarded guy. Anyway, we were shuttling from the outlet in Cineleisure and Hereen twice as I couldn't really find the one that I wanted. Then was in the queue for the Tuky for around half an hour and was lucky enough in the lucky dip to get myself another stud on the same pair! Lynn claimed she was the lucky charm, so whatever. . since she accompanied me back and forth several times, with some grouching along the way. . ha ha. .

After a long day of smashing, walking and standing, we settled down at Spinelli's for the night. Nothing can go wrong when there's cheesecake for me. I ‘lost’ my wallet for 2 hours last night. Call it good luck or good karma, I recovered my wallet soon after making a police report. A good Samaritan brought it to Tampines NPC after he (or maybe she) found it at the place I dropped it. It was after a running session with Wenyuan at Tampines Stadium carpark last night, that I somehow accidentally drop the wallet without realizing it. Only when I reach Tampines Central after I parked my bike that I couldn’t find my wallet. It was less than 10 min so I thought if I rushed back to Tampines Stadium I might still find it lying there. To my disappointment (no surprise though) . . . I couldn’t find it. This is the result of Singaporeans being well trained to look out for unattended suspicious articles.

After cursing and swearing, I made my way back to Tampines Central and met up with Wenyuan at TM Mac. I made a call to cancel my card while gloating over my misfortune. Next was to make a police report for the very costly NRIC. I was not in the mood for dinner even though my stomach was begging for food after the 12km run. While making our way to my bike, Wenyuan’s phone just flew out of his hand and crashed to the floor after someone knocked into him. His iPhone became a disaster instantly. The LCD screen was badly smashed and covered with cracks. Being Wenyuan, he went up to the guy to settle the matter. I couldn’t afford to wait for him lest someone might already misuse my IC. Before heading to the NPC, I tried my luck once more at Tampines Stadium carpark. . . and you guessed it. . without much luck.

At NPC, I was told that I couldn’t park inside. Great. . Was already pissed off and it couldn’t get any better. Made one big stupid round to park at the nearby public carpark. Back at the NPC, had to spend time declaring my health status and confirmed with them that I was not in Mexico for the past few days. Duh. . .the closest thing I ever get to Mexico was chomping down those Stuffed Jalapenos at Botak Jones. Law is law. . . no point arguing. Once I made known my purpose for the visit, my sulky face brightened up instantaneously upon seeing the officer taking out a familiar looking wallet out of the drawer. I let out a huge relief after learning that it was indeed my wallet. It just felt like standing at the urinal peeing out the highest amount of urine after holding it for a very long time. You know what I mean. . .

Things were not as rosy in Wenyuan’s case however. After pursuing the guy and trying to thrash things out, the police was called in to mediate. But as usual, in such situations where it’s difficult to determine the party at fault, the police can only term it as being 'unfortunate'. He was adamant to pursue the matter though and intending to sue the guy. So from the one being consoled earlier on, then it was my turn to console him. I can understand the feeling. . . My previous phone (although its only a Nokia and not as chic as Apple), suffered the same fate. Only difference is I can’t blame anyone but myself for falling down and landed my whole body weight on the phone, which was in my pocket. But the misery felt is totally the same. Imagine having to pay over 300bucks to get a replacement. So in total he would have spent around 1k on the phone within barely 3 months. However I am glad I won't have to go to the trouble of replacing those cards in my wallet if I didn't manage to get it back. Just that I won't be able to withdraw cash for the next few days with my terminated card.

Good things come in pairs, but bad ones come in a series! I woke up this morning, opened up a brand box of contact lens only to discover that one side of the pair was chipped. How lucky can I get. . . Someone get me some pomelo leaves to bathe in please!

So near, yet so far. . .

Over the weekends, I spent the whole day at Bedok Reservoir for the PA Championship Dragonboat Race. This time, Kiyah was 'recruited' by Punggol East, to bring them the championship glory. . . errr tough job, ha. .

It was an excellent move anyway, we were practically upgraded from the usual 'economy' class to 'first' class. There were endless supplies of fruits, tons of isotonic drinks and also sponsored Shark Energy Drinks. And also came with a tentage space for the Punggol groups, with a clear view of the finishing line. We even had the chance to brush shoulders with an MP and a Mayor. How much more glam can that be. . .

I was part of the CSC 10 Crew mixed which rowed all the way to the Finals. Everyone was filled with jubilation as it wasn't wasy to get into the Finals. But that also meant that our competitors were gonna be stronger. And indeed they were. . . facing off against Mountbatten, PLK and Eunos was a tall order. But we are there, getting closer to be a finisher on the winners' podium. Given time, a medal will be within our reach.. . She's the guru that I seek advice from whenever I'm stuck at something at work. I've been learning some Thai phrases from her now and then. And she will just start stuttering in Thai to herself whenever's she's stressed. Very amusing indeed. . . But not so for the current situation in Bangkok, the yellow and red taking turns to show their prowess. Whatever it is, this neverending tussle had better cease by the time I'm making my trip there in July. It's Songkran for goodness sake, stick to the water squirting and stop throwing stones people. . .

After a long weekend, it was really dreadful going back to work yesterday. Monday, being so blue as it is already, is a bane for me. . having to clear the weekends backlog. After work, I then rushed for this year's new Social Comm meeting in town. I don't even know why I am in the commitee in the first place. My first assigned task. . . an exciting bowling event for staff, which I won't get to play. . . *GROAN*

I will be running for SIA on this Thursday JP Morgan Corporate Challenge after being selected by SIA Sports club. That means no running session with the gang at Queenstown this Thursdays. It seems like it has been ages since we last ran together. Hopefully I'm on track for the road to Sundown.

This season Kiyah's training has kinda intensified. All prep up for the upcoming PA Race next week. Also we are going for overseas races for the very first time. The one that is more or less confirmed is the Penang race in May which I had signed up for, and the other one which is still in limbo is the Putrajaya Race in June. Its a good way to unwind for me, the experience and exposure of rowing in waters other than Kallang river, or should I say swamp. And Penang will be the furthest state I have ever been to in Peninsula Malaysia, since I've never made it past KL. Plenty of things happened this month. I am quite settled in at work now. My new best friend is the telex machine. Without fail I will show some love to it before knocking off from work, just hoping that the paper doesnt get jammed or else I'm screwed the next day. Especially on Fridays. . if the machine decides to throw a tantrum, I can forget about going back on time on Monday.

Work aside, my social life this month is truly enriching. There were 2 HUGE birthday bashes. Birthday celebrations this year seemed to be like a festival, stretching for several days. The March 'twins' Stella & Hui Liang had a preview somewhere in April, a dinner a few days before the real day and a celebration on Mar 11th itself. Jef's 'festival' some 2 days ago consist of a countdown party and a dinner the next day. Even Womad can't beat that!

The unrelated unidentical twins born on the same day with the same initial, and also almost the same height. . .

There's more to come early next month. . . This week's pace is kinda fast for me. After a few days in Bangkok, I went straight back to work to assume a new responsibility. It was a few days of handover and takeover which seems to be never ending. I had 2 days to understudy the new function, which even a 2 weeks period wont be enough to cover. I will just have to absorb as much as I can and grapple along the way.

Today marks the last day I will be at Inflight Services. My boss gave me this cutesy banana cartoon folder as a 'farewell' gift. Since my first day, I have been given and called by several names. "Banana Man" was one of it, thanks to my loyalty to the fruit which I consume everyday. Boss call me "Fuzzy", given by Elsie, my office hours scandal. And also Mingli, a.k.a Senior Girl called me "Junior Boy" so tenderly without fail everytime. Come Monday, I won't be able to hear my aliases that often. . .

Exactly a week ago, I was in the land of a thousand smiles. A Bangkok vacation can never go wrong. A good time for some retail therapy without really the need to consider the price. Didn't buy a lot though, can always do it again this coming July. And after seeing Wenyuan's tailor made-suit, will definitely make one for myself at the next trip. A perfect cut outfit at a reasonable price, it's worth the money.

My apologies to Hui Liang and Stella for not being able to make it for today's birthday dinner. We will tear down the house next Wed guys, to celebrate the 24 years of your existence!

Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow. .

Just as I was about to warm up my seat, I had to give it up. After almost a year in Inflight Services, its time to say goodbye. SMO has already confirmed my move to Ground Services early this week. Though I will be transferred just a few doors away from my current work station, it just wont be the same anymore. I will miss the bitching and zapping session with Inflight and Cabin Crew department, which I have also learnt to pick up since I became a part of the department. A skill that I have yet to sharpen may prove to be useful in time to come. My sincere thanks to my bitching gurus, Chris and Azura. Although I'm leaving, I'm gonna make sure that I will be at future Popiah Parties, even if I have to shamelessly invite myself.

Coincidentally, my manager is leaving the company this week. Thanks for the lunch Mr Chan, it was supposed to be our treat but you had to make a scene at the counter to wrestle for the bill causing heads to turn at us.

I will be jetting off to Bangkok tomorow. Thank goodness I will have a break from work before the shuffling. Such a coincidence (again). Just what I need before I start from scratch again. . .

Discovering Asia

Inflight Services stole the limelight yesterday at SilkAir's 20th Anniversary Dinner & Dance. I was dressed up as a Samurai and together with Chris in his commoner Emperor's robe, Mohd the Arabian King, Jasmine the Punjab lady and Azura the Thai Princess, we arrived in style at Meritus Mandarin. When the elevator's door open at the 6th floor, all eyes were on us either in awe or disbelief. We were dressed up according to the theme for the night which was Asian Costumes, and those who were gawking at us were mostly dressed in boring shirts and dresses, *yawn*

The hunt for costumes began early this month. We could have just wore what we have in our closet or borrow from other colleagues. But it will be very common and wont make much of an impact. First round of costume hunting at PA WearHouse did not produce any positve result. They were scheduled to close a few days before our D & D to prepare for relocation. Then a week before the event, I went to recce for costumes with Lynn, Stella and Jenn at Bugis area. We didn't even had to compare between different shops as I settled for my Samurai costume at the very first shop we went to, called Masquerade at Bali Lane. I told the rest first thing when I went back to work on Monday, and we immediately made a trip during lunch. For $50, it's quite worth the money, as it comes complete with accesories and footwear, and headgears too. The staff was very warm and friendly, rendered superb service. . . highly recommended.

I was quite surprised to be crowned the Best Dressed Male as I thought Mohd will definitely win it with his over the top headgear. Good thing all the 3 guys were on stage, being finalist for the Best Dressed award. Our table also swept away the Best Dressed Table prize. The winner for Best Dressed Female was my Japanese maiden, Karen Foley. The Japs invasion!

Kumar entertained the guests with his (or her) lewd jokes, coupled along with anti-govt pun. People sure enjoy listening to such topics.

This could be the last time for me being together in such occasion with Inflight Services. Earlier in the day, my boss informed me of SM intention to transfer me to Ground Services. Though I will have more opportunities there, the environment won't ever be the same as my current department which I adores very much.

All about TV

After a long day from the gym after work, all I wanna do is laze on my bed and tune in to the TV and watch a show, a decent one that is. This evening I was channel surfing and settled for the new 'comedy' series starring Fiona Xie with a bunch of either unknown or not well known cast. But "Serves You Right" proved to be scarier than a horror show . The plot was so horrendous that it just left my gums dry because I didn't even let out a single laughter. The script was so tasteless, and gave me goosebumps. There was a scene about an Indian man recalling his childhood days. In it he was taunting another boy because of his poverty. The boy then retorted :

"One day I will be bigger and better than you. Every word I say is true, this I promise you". ("This I promise you" was repeated several times til the man snapped back to reality)

Sounds familiar? It's a line from one of N'Sync's songs! Duh, either the scriptwriter was trying to be witty or she (or maybe he) was a N'Sync groupie. Don't even get me started on the cast acting. It just looks like one of those roleplays we often had to do in poly during tutorials.

The quality of local shows are getting more substandard. Take for example the latest Japanese variety/game show "Ninja Warrior", and compare it to let's say. . . Singapore's very own "The Showdown" - the game show where local celebrities dressed up in weird costumes and compete in challenges. I don't have to mention that the entertainment value of the 2 show were world's apart. I guess Channel 5 is only capable of screening foreign dramas and shows instead of producing one on its own. However, I was baffled that it did not telecast yesterday's Grammy which it had been doing so for the past years. Come home to 5? Don't even bother to. . .

City Alive(less)

It looked like a scene off the Step Up movie. The idea of having a street party was exciting. City Alive, the post Chingay party was the first of its kind being held did not really deliver though. The set up and atmosphere was perfect, however just that the DJ did not so called 'connect' with the crowd. It was too 'reggae-ish'. . . most of the tunes spinned were R&B/Hip Hop music mashed with reggae rapping. Although its the kind of music that will supposedly hype the crowd up, we still prefer our familiar mainstream party club mix.

The dance battle was awesome though. The final was a face off between a group of 'alternatives' who call themselves the Pink Dollar (very apt indeed), and the crap Poppers. Pink Dollar was definitely the crowd fave, the way they groove will both sides of the gender to shame. They fused their B-Boy moves with a tinge of bitchiness. It was not just typical slutty sashaying and gyrating which I thought they will display when I saw them coming on stage.
The Poppers' style was just... popping moves throughout.
*Surprise, surprise*
Their routine was so dead boring and we wondered how did they even got through to the face off.

But no complaints, it was free, thanks to Eliza for inviting me, Jenn and Lays. Although it pales in comparison to ZoukOut, the effort to organise City Alive is commendable. Given time, it may just be a must-go event in the coming years. A friendly advice to those contact lens users - never forget your lens kit. You may never knew when you need it, lest someone (your own friend) gets too excited and poked your eyes causing your lens to drop off. I will never have guessed I need my kit so badly yesterday til it happened to me. Usually I will bring it when I am out of the house. A classic example of "Having it when I don't need it, and not having it when I needed it the most." Luckily I manage to regain my eyesight, after using some ice from Jenn's free drink to moisten the lens and place it back on my cornea.

It was post LNY dinner before that. Apologies to Jef, HL, Lynn and Stella for not being able to join me to City Alive. Blame Eliza for having only 4 tickets. Anyway they didn't miss much.

Today I had lunch with Daniel, who was back in town for his study break. The fake Aussie was craving for some thosai so we had it for lunch at Tekka. He is enjoying his life down under so much that he may just stay there for good after he graduates in a few months. But well, everything is filled with uncertainty now given the current crisis. If he's lucky enough and able to secure a good life there, good for him. Else Mindef will be more than happy to assign him a unit when he comes back.

Spending the holidays with TV

Its a super long weekend, thanks to the Lunar New Year. Else I will just go berserk at home and spend the whole day watching TV. Been doing that since Sat night, after coming back from Sentosa with Jenn & Eliza. Even though the turnout was poor, it didn't dampen our mood for the day, basking (or baking rather) under the sun, trying to make the feeling ala a vacation in Barbados.

Talking about TV, the latest American Idol series has just been aired. It's definitely one of my fave shows and I will follow through the season most of the time. However after all these years, people are getting jaded with the show and has become less fanatic about it. The series have produced winners with a technically almost pitch perfect voice with powerful lungs. However their star doesnt shine for long, often going into obscurity after an album, and some only after a single. So far, only the first idol, Kelly Clarkson, seem to be the most successful. Ruben Studdard did not make much of an impact like his weight did. Fantasia, with her unique 'Donald Duck-has-a sorethroat' voice has not recover til now. Carrie Underwood is huge in the country charts which is not a mainstream in this part of the world. And who's Taylor Hicks? I don't even remember him releasing a single after being crowned Idol 5th season winner. Jordin Sparks is doing good so far, taking one step at a time, hopefully will have enough air for a second album. And of course the latest Idol, David Cook's light is still on for the time being.

Although all past winners are good singers, their songs aren't just huge enough to be hits. Oh well, I will just continue watching the show. Besides, they have a new judge on the panel to spice up the show. Apart from Idol, there are tons of good shows on TV for these 2 days. In fact, there was a very good one I just watched. . .The Little Nyonya Reunion! Ha. . At least this was far much better than the 3min crap. . .

The End of a Nokia Dynasty

14th January marks the last day that I carry a Nokia handphone in my pocket after I bought a new Samsung F480. The N6288 has served me well for the past 21 months, without any glitch in rendering its services for my communication purposes.

It was a difficult decision for me to switch to Samsung as I had been a hardcore Nokia user, sticking with the brand loyally right from day one. It was a choice between F480 and Nokia E71. The latter did not appeal very much to me thus the decision for the switch.

Nokia ought to be hailed as the 'Pioneer of Mobile Phones'. Back in year 2000, when people are starting to chuck their pagers for handphone, Nokia was the phone that almost everyone own. The N3210 was the craze back then, being the first 'modern era' phone of Y2K. Now, mobile phones have become an essential gadget for everyone. It is capable of performing far complex functions than just playing 'Snake' on it.

9 years on, 5 Nokias later, it was time for me to step out of my Nokia comfort-zone. . Thank you Nokia for Connecting People. . .

The Fever Continues. . .

It has already been almost a week that the finale of very much loved (except for Lynn who hates it) 'The Little Nyonya' was aired. The next few days, local papers featured extensive articles on the show. Besides the report on the staggering 1.6 million or so viewers tuning in to catch the last episode, there were also articles from other aspects that were 'Nyonya-related'. People were interested about everything Peranakan, from the costume to the food. Thanks to the powerful media influence, Peranakan restaurants and shops are cashing in on the fever.

The show made such a huge impact that the producers have come up with a special 3 minutes 'Final Chapter'. I, for sure, will not miss it which will somewhat relieve my withdrawal symptoms. After the final episode, the show became a hot topic over breakfast at the pantry the next day. Some of my colleagues were debating over the ending saying that it was not a 'happy ever after' scene. Who doesn't love happy ending? But if had turned out that way, the show will not be less different from other predictable storyline drama serials.

Anyway, it was really a good show to watch. Mediacorp will have a tough time to produce another drama that will rival the nyonya, or not.

On another note, I can foresee that there will be several 'Yueniang wannabes' at SilkAir Annual Dinner and Dance next month. With the Asian Costumes theme that night, it will be the night of resurrection for Sarong Kebaya!

New, new, new!

It's a NEW YEAR, so I have decided to move my blog from Friendster to here! Friendster has been awesome, but it has become tiring - taking forever to load and numerous errors each time I tried to publish my blog. . .

After bidding 2008 goodbye with a fanfare farewell at Siloso Beach, it’s that time of the year to come up with new resolutions, or perhaps renew your past resolutions which are not fulfilled or even attempt to fulfill. For me, I managed to carry out 4 out of the 6 resolutions made in the beginning of 2008. So I guess that is not too bad.

2008 had been a very exciting year for me. There were lots of activities going on and there were always something to look forward to, thanks to my great friends (and MYSELF) in planning the events. I also embarked on a self devised ‘healthy lifestyle’ program, being mindful of my diet and working out to get into shape. And with the improved fitness, I was able to accomplish things that I thought I wouldn’t be able to previously. I took up rowing, participated in running events and also achieved my first IPPT Gold Award. It was truly rewarding. . .

For 2009, I guess it won’t be any much different from 2008. There are 2 Bangkok trips to look forward to, will try to sign up for more than the current 5 running events and improve on the timings. For now its back to 5 days work week, after enjoying the 2 long weekends in December... And the next closest thing to look forward to is the last episode of The Little Nyonya tomorrow!
